Senior Electrical Engineer (Generation) - Nuclear

This Opportunity WSP is currently initiating a search for a Senior Electrical Engineer (Generation) - Nuclear to join our Power & Energy Team. The candidate will be involved in projects with our Power Generation Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges. The Senior Electrical Engineer (Generation) - Nuclear will provide technical leadership for nuclear generation projects, including operating plant modifications, new nuclear and advanced reactor development, life extension, plant restart and recommissioning, and owner’s engineer or program management assignments. The successful candidate will bring demonstrated nuclear electrical engineering experience and a working knowledge of the regulatory, licensing, quality, and configuration-control requirements that govern safety-related and important-to-safety structures, systems, and components. This role will lead and perform electrical design, systems engineering, analysis, verification, and technical oversight across the project life cycle, from feasibility and conceptual design through detailed design, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, turnover, and operating support. The engineer will work directly with utility owners, reactor technology developers, architect-engineers, equipment suppliers, constructors, and multidisciplinary project teams. The position is accountable for technical decisions, engineering quality, design integration, and timely resolution of complex electrical system and equipment issues. Your Impact Lead electrical engineering for operating nuclear plants, new nuclear, and advanced reactor projects, serving as the responsible engineer or discipline technical lead for assigned work. Design, analyze, and modify Class 1E and non-Class 1E AC and DC power systems, emergency power, batteries and chargers, switchgear, transformers, motors, cables, grounding, and protection and control systems. Prepare and independently review nuclear-grade calculations, drawings, specifications, design change packages, equipment procurement documents, and technical reports. Apply nuclear safety classification, quality classification, seismic categorization, equipment qualification, separation, single-failure, licensing-basis, design-basis, and configuration-management requirements. Lead power system studies, including load flow, short-circuit, motor starting, voltage drop, cable ampacity, grounding, battery sizing, protection and coordination, and arc-flash analysis. Support plant modifications, walkdowns, constructability reviews, vendor evaluations, factory and site testing, commissioning, outage execution, troubleshooting, and resolution of field and equipment issues. Coordinate electrical interfaces across instrumentation and controls, mechanical, civil/structural, fire protection, licensing, cybersecurity, quality, procurement, construction, and operations teams. Manage technical scope, schedule, budget, risks, assumptions, interfaces, and deliverables while ensuring engineering work is accurate, complete, timely, and compliant with approved nuclear procedures. Provide trusted technical advice to clients, reactor vendors, equipment suppliers, and contractors; mentor engineers and contribute to proposals, capability development, and follow-on work. Prepare and independently review nuclear-grade calculations, drawings, specifications, design change packages, equipment procurement documents, and technical reports. Apply nuclear safety classification, quality classification, seismic categorization, equipment qualification, separation, single-failure, licensing-basis, design-basis, and configuration-management requirements. Nuclear Codes, Standards, and Regulatory Framework Apply the codes, standards, regulatory requirements, regulatory guidance, and client procedures invoked by the facility licensing basis, design basis, contract, and approved quality assurance program. Relevant experience should include several of the following: Safety-related, important-to-safety, and non-safety-related electrical systems and equipment Class 1E AC and DC power systems, where applicable Nuclear safety classification, quality classification, seismic classification, electrical separation, equipment qualification, and single-failure requirements Nuclear configuration management, design control, independent verification, procurement, corrective action, and nonconformance processes Applicable NRC requirements, ASME NQA-1, IEEE nuclear power standards, NFPA requirements, and other project-specific electrical codes and standards Equivalent Canadian or international nuclear regulatory requirements and standards, where applicable Specific codes, standards, regulatory requirements, and editions will be determined by the project jurisdiction, technology, contract, and facility licensing basis. Who You Are Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited engineering program and a Professional Engineer license in at least one U.S. jurisdiction, or the ability to obtain one within an agreed timeframe. 10+ years of relevant electrical engineering experience, including substantial experience supporting commercial nuclear power plants, nuclear facilities, or advanced reactor projects. Recent nuclear design, modification, or systems engineering experience is strongly preferred. Demonstrated experience with nuclear electrical systems, including safety-related and important-to-safety equipment, Class 1E and non-Class 1E power systems, safety and quality classifications, seismic categorization, and applicable design-basis requirements. Working knowledge of nuclear codes, standards, regulatory requirements, and quality assurance programs, including experience with 10 CFR Part 50 Appendix B and/or ASME NQA-1 design-control and configuration-management processes. Proven ability to develop, review, and independently verify electrical calculations, specifications, drawings, design change packages, procurement documents, and vendor submittals for nuclear applications. Strong technical capability in electrical distribution, protective relaying and control, AC and DC systems, batteries and chargers, cables and raceways, grounding, and relevant power system studies. Ability to lead multidisciplinary engineering work, exercise independent technical judgment, communicate clearly with clients and project stakeholders, and obtain access to nuclear facilities where required. Preferred Qualifications Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field. Professional Engineer license in at least one U.S. jurisdiction. 10+ years of nuclear industry experience, including operating plant, architect-engineer, owner’s engineer, reactor vendor, or nuclear equipment supplier experience. Experience with operating plant modifications, new nuclear or advanced reactor projects, small modular reactors, microreactors, life extension, power uprates, or decommissioning. Experience in one or more specialized areas: Class 1E systems, environmental qualification, seismic qualification, station blackout, alternate AC power, DC systems, electrical separation, fire safe shutdown, equipment reliability, aging management, or commercial-grade dedication. Experience with nuclear cyber security interfaces for digital electrical and protection systems. Qualification as a design verifier, nuclear lead engineer, or technical authority under an established nuclear engineering program. Operating nuclear plant experience in electrical design engineering, electrical systems engineering, plant modifications, outage support, equipment reliability, commissioning, restart, or operational readiness. Experience interfacing with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, or other nuclear regulators and authorized nuclear inspection organizations. Existing unescorted nuclear plant access, Leadership Expectations Protect nuclear safety and quality, including the willingness to stop, question, document, and escalate when requirements, assumptions, or field conditions are unclear. Exercise conservative technical judgment and maintain clear traceability from requirements and design inputs through analysis, verification, installation, testing, and final records. Accept accountability for the accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and configuration control of assigned engineering work, and ensure approved design criteria, procedures, codes, standards, and quality requirements are applied. Build trust with nuclear clients through technical credibility, disciplined execution, and transparent communication of risk, uncertainty, and trade-offs. Develop others through coaching, rigorous review, and practical transfer of nuclear engineering knowledge. Working Conditions This position may require travel to nuclear facilities, vendor facilities, construction sites, and client offices. Work may include plant walkdowns, outage support, field assignments, and access to industrial or radiologically controlled environments.
