Staff Engineer - Releases

Accountabilities: Own the technical direction and architecture of the releases platform, including the canonical release model and relationships between services, environments, commits, artifacts, and actors. Lead key technical decisions around security, reliability, scalability, immutable evidence trails, policy gates, and release governance. Drive complex integrations with CI, source control, and deployment systems, including ingestion from pipelines and Git-based deployment platforms. Design systems that can support progressive delivery capabilities such as canary analysis, blue/green deployments, staged rollouts, health-based promotion, and automated rollback. Build, scale, and improve tools and systems that support large-scale engineering teams and critical software delivery workflows. Investigate and resolve complex performance, reliability, and scalability challenges across infrastructure, backend services, and data stores. Work directly with customers and stakeholders to understand release and governance challenges and translate them into practical, high-impact technical solutions. Improve developer experience through better tooling, automation, self-service workflows, and engineering processes. Share technical knowledge through documentation, mentoring, pairing, and engineering best practices. Contribute to cross-team tooling, infrastructure, and engineering frameworks. Communicate technical trade-offs clearly and build alignment around important architectural and engineering decisions. Requirements Proven experience building and operating production systems at scale, ideally with Go, Ruby on Rails, or comparable technologies. Strong experience designing event-driven or audit-log systems, including immutable records, event sourcing, or append-only data models. Deep understanding of cloud infrastructure and complex containerized applications, with AWS experience preferred. Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL or similar relational databases, including performance and replication considerations. Experience solving distributed systems, observability, infrastructure reliability, and scalability challenges. Hands-on experience building or operating deployment and release-orchestration platforms that safely move changes from merge to production and model deployment state. Familiarity with CD and deployment platforms such as Argo CD, Argo Rollouts, Spinnaker, Flux, or similar technologies. Experience with workflow orchestration engines such as Temporal or comparable systems for coordinating complex, multi-step deployments. Deep understanding of progressive delivery practices, including canary deployments and analysis, blue/green releases, staged and phased rollouts, feature flags, health-based promotion, and automated rollback. Experience designing unified, self-service deployment workflows used across multiple teams or business units while maintaining appropriate guardrails and governance. Experience with DORA metrics, release governance, compliance, or audit requirements in large-scale or regulated engineering environments. Experience integrating source control and CI/CD platforms such as GitHub, GitLab, or comparable systems. Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly within remote-first environments. Ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences. Collaborative and pragmatic approach, balancing technical quality with business context. Comfortable mentoring engineers and leading technical discussions across teams. Additional experience with Kubernetes, Terraform, infrastructure-as-code, Kafka, Flink, SRE practices, systems programming, Linux/Unix internals, or cloud security is valuable.
