Senior Director, Complex Systems

Accountabilities:: Shape enterprise priorities and provide strategic leadership for the Complex Systems portfolio, ensuring the missions of Land, Transportation, and Industry remain central to portfolio decisions. Develop and advance an integrated strategy connecting technical expertise, policy, infrastructure, finance, innovation, and markets across programs, disciplines, and regions. Strengthen program effectiveness by supporting program leaders, clarifying outcomes, monitoring progress, building leadership and technical capacity, and helping teams navigate strategic trade-offs. Guide globally relevant policy and advocacy priorities based on technical, economic, political, and market realities, adapting strategies to regional contexts. Direct portfolio planning, budgeting, prioritization, and shared investments to align resources with high-impact opportunities and organizational priorities. Build alignment across programs, solution portfolios, regions, and organizational functions while respecting program ownership and subject-matter expertise. Serve as a senior external representative and help shape narratives, policy positions, and thought leadership around systems-level climate solutions. Build trusted relationships with policymakers, government stakeholders, industry leaders, financial institutions, academics, media, philanthropic organizations, and civil society partners. Partner with Development, Communications, and senior leadership teams to shape fundraising strategy, cultivate funder relationships, and secure resources aligned with portfolio priorities. Provide leadership that strengthens accountability, succession readiness, team effectiveness, and long-term organizational capacity. Requirements: 15+ years of progressively responsible experience in climate, energy, environmental policy, or related fields, including senior leadership of complex programs, portfolios, departments, or multidisciplinary teams. Demonstrated record of shaping strategy and influencing policy outcomes within complex climate, energy, environmental, government, industry, advocacy, research, or related environments. Experience leading senior leaders and developing leadership capacity, team effectiveness, accountability, and succession readiness. Deep understanding of systems-level climate challenges and the barriers involved in transforming land, transportation, and industrial systems. Experience developing and executing strategies that integrate technical, policy, financial, market, organizational, and regional considerations. Ability to lead effectively across functions, disciplines, and geographies within a matrixed organization while respecting program missions and subject-matter expertise. Experience representing an organization externally and building trusted relationships with senior policymakers, funders, industry leaders, and strategic partners. Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience in a relevant field. Fundraising, donor engagement, or philanthropic partnership experience is preferred. Experience working across the United States, Europe, or other regional contexts within a global or cross-regional organization is preferred. Familiarity with hard-to-abate sectors, land systems, transportation, industrial decarbonization, carbon management, fuels, or related climate solutions is preferred. Experience contributing to organizational strategy, portfolio design, or operating model transformation is preferred. Familiarity with nonprofit, policy, advocacy, technical, research, philanthropic, or other mission-driven environments is preferred.
