Work Arrangement This role requires regular work in an active processing-center environment and direct collaboration with Operations personnel. Occasional travel, extended onsite support, or work outside standard hours may be required to support operational trials, installations, implementations, or launches. The Role General Motors is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer – Industrial and Process Engineering to improve the safety, efficiency, capacity, and scalability of operations at the Davison Road Processing Center. This role combines industrial engineering expertise with hands-on process engineering, continuous improvement, and new-project development. You will design effective workstations and material-flow processes, conduct standard-time and work-measurement studies, develop accurate standardized work, and lead improvements from problem definition through implementation and sustainment. You will also translate operational needs into practical engineering concepts, requirements, estimates, implementation plans, and measurable outcomes. This is an individual-contributor role for an engineer who can exercise independent judgment, apply strong technical depth, and lead cross-functional work without direct authority. You will serve as a trusted technical partner to Operations and help build capability across the engineering and operating teams. What You’ll Do Industrial engineering and standardized work Design, evaluate, and improve workstations, processes, layouts, and material-flow solutions for processing-center operations. Conduct Standard Time Data System (STDS) time studies, work measurement, method studies, and work-combination analyses to establish labor and capacity requirements. Develop labor plans, staffing models, process-balance recommendations, capacity analyses, and throughput-improvement plans. Create, update, and validate Job Element Sheets (JES), Standard Operation Sheets (SOS), and related standardized-work documentation. Confirm that documented methods accurately reflect work performed and meet safety, quality, ergonomic, productivity, and material-flow requirements. Perform ergonomic reviews and incorporate operator feedback into workstation, tooling, equipment, and process designs. Maintain engineering data and documentation so standards, layouts, time studies, and operating methods remain current and traceable. Process engineering and continuous improvement Analyze current-state processes to identify waste, bottlenecks, variation, unnecessary motion, quality risks, and capacity constraints. Lead structured problem solving and continuous-improvement activities using data, direct observation, root-cause analysis, and Lean manufacturing principles. Develop future-state process concepts and lead implementation plans that improve safety, quality, delivery, cost, productivity, and employee experience. Evaluate alternative process, equipment, tooling, technology, and material-handling solutions and recommend the best overall value. Partner with Operations leaders, hourly employees, Quality, Safety, Maintenance, Facilities, Information Technology, Automation, and suppliers to resolve issues and sustain improvements. Validate implemented changes through pilot runs, operational trials, updated time studies, capability checks, and performance monitoring. Coach team members and operating partners in standardized work, work measurement, process improvement, and disciplined change management. New-project scoping and execution Translate business needs and operational pain points into project charters, problem statements, scope boundaries, requirements, assumptions, risks, and success measures. Develop preliminary concepts, process flows, workstation requirements, space and material-flow needs, labor impacts, implementation timing, and cost estimates for new or expanded projects. Support business cases and investment decisions by comparing alternatives and documenting expected benefits, constraints, dependencies, and return on investment. Lead cross-functional reviews from concept through implementation, including design reviews, supplier or contractor coordination, installation readiness, process validation, and handoff to Operations. Manage open issues, decisions, action items, and stakeholder communications to keep projects aligned with safety, quality, timing, cost, and performance expectations. Capture lessons learned and convert successful solutions into repeatable standards, templates, and best practices. Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications) Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Operations Engineering, or a related engineering discipline preferred. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Five or more years of experience in industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering, warehouse engineering, logistics engineering, or a closely related operational environment. Demonstrated experience with work measurement, time studies, standard-time development, labor planning, process balancing, or capacity analysis. Demonstrated experience designing or improving workstations, layouts, material flow, or standardized work. Experience developing and maintaining job instructions, standardized operating methods, or equivalent process documentation. Demonstrated ability to lead process-improvement efforts from data collection and problem definition through implementation and sustainment. Demonstrated ability to independently manage complex assignments, make sound engineering judgments, and communicate recommendations to multiple levels of leadership. Strong analytical, written, presentation, facilitation, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work regularly in an active processing-center environment and collaborate directly with Operations personnel. What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications) Experience applying manufacturing-system principles, standardized work, work measurement, or process-improvement methodologies. Experience in warehouse, fulfillment, material handling, storage, distribution, or processing-center operations. Experience scoping new facilities, process expansions, automation, material-handling equipment, tooling, or technology deployments. Working knowledge of ergonomics assessment, facility and workstation layout, process simulation, or throughput modeling.
