Senior Backend Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer based in Switzerland. This role offers the opportunity to build scalable backend systems that support trust-focused workflows within a European fintech environment. You’ll design reliable APIs and infrastructure while contributing to the long-term technical architecture of the platform. The position combines hands-on backend engineering with systems thinking, quality ownership, and thoughtful problem-solving. You’ll work closely with engineers to strengthen development practices, testing standards, and maintainable technical foundations. The role requires a strong understanding of user needs and system behavior, particularly when solving complex problems in ambiguous environments. You’ll have meaningful influence on technical direction and engineering culture while working as part of a collaborative, distributed team. The position is fully remote within European time zones and offers a senior-level compensation package. Accountabilities: Design and implement clean, scalable, and testable backend systems and APIs. Architect backend infrastructure capable of supporting high-volume and high-trust workflows. Drive strong standards for automated testing, code quality, reliability, and long-term maintainability. Analyze user needs and system behavior to identify effective solutions to complex technical problems. Contribute to long-term architecture decisions and the evolution of backend infrastructure. Collaborate with engineering teammates to improve development practices, technical processes, and overall engineering quality. Help shape technical direction and contribute to a strong, thoughtful engineering culture. Work effectively in ambiguous situations while balancing immediate delivery needs with long-term technical considerations. Requirements: 5+ years of backend engineering experience working with production systems. Strong systems-thinking skills and the ability to reason about scalable, maintainable, long-term architecture. Experience designing scalable APIs and backend infrastructure for high-volume or high-trust environments. Professional experience with one or more backend technologies such as Node.js, TypeScript, Python, Go, or Java. Production experience with relational databases, automated testing, message queues, and containerized or cloud environments. Familiarity with technologies such as Kubernetes and AWS. Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to contribute constructively to technical discussions. Ability to learn quickly, navigate ambiguity, and approach problems with curiosity, kindness, and sound judgment. Background in fintech, payments, identity, or other regulated industries is a plus. Must already have the right to work in Europe, as visa sponsorship is not provided. Benefits: Annual base salary of €116,000–€146,000.
