Protection Engineer

Accountabilities:: Design, specify, and review protective relay schemes for high-voltage power transformers, substations, and associated electrical equipment. Perform protective relay coordination studies, short-circuit analyses, and arc-flash hazard studies. Calculate, develop, and document relay settings for transformer differential, overcurrent, and other protection functions. Review one-line diagrams, relay logic, SCADA/control schematics, and protection and control drawings for technical accuracy and compliance. Support field commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting of protection and control systems in collaboration with field technicians and project teams. Investigate relay misoperations and equipment failures, leading root-cause analysis and developing corrective-action recommendations. Maintain and improve protection engineering standards, relay-setting templates, procedures, and technical documentation. Ensure protection designs align with NERC PRC standards, IEEE/ANSI guidelines , and client- or utility-specific requirements. Provide technical guidance, knowledge sharing, and mentorship to field technicians and junior engineering staff. Collaborate with project and engineering teams to resolve technical challenges and maintain reliable project delivery. Travel to client and project sites nationwide as needed to support testing, commissioning, and field engineering activities. Follow required safety procedures, PPE requirements, and site protocols when supporting energized transformer and substation locations. Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline , or equivalent hands-on engineering experience. Approximately 3–5 years of experience in high-voltage transformer protection, protective relaying, or power system protection engineering. Hands-on experience with protective relay platforms such as SEL, GE Multilin, Siemens, or ABB . Proficiency with relay-setting, coordination, or power-system analysis software such as AcSELerator, ETAP, Aspen OneLiner, CAPE, or SKM . Strong working knowledge of protection and control drawings, one-line diagrams, SCADA systems, and relay logic. Familiarity with NERC PRC standards, IEEE C37 series standards , and utility protection practices. Strong analytical, troubleshooting, technical writing, and documentation skills. Ability to investigate complex technical issues and translate findings into practical corrective actions. Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with engineers, technicians, project teams, and clients. Ability to work independently while taking ownership of assigned engineering scope. Willingness and ability to travel approximately 30–40% to project and client sites across the United States. EIT certification or a Professional Engineer (PE) license is advantageous. Experience with high-voltage transformer testing, maintenance, or field services is preferred. Experience with substation automation, SCADA integration, or communications-assisted protection schemes is a plus. Previous experience in utility, transmission, or electrical field-services environments is advantageous. Experience mentoring junior engineers or technicians is also beneficial.
