Mechanical Engineer - Fleet Reliability and Operations (Hydroelectric industry)

Accountabilities:: Provide engineering support for hydroelectric turbine and generator projects, including rehabilitation, new projects, service activities, warranty support, and project completion. Conduct site visits to assess the condition of existing turbine and generator equipment and supervise signature tests before equipment disassembly. Maintain regular communication with site teams to answer technical questions, anticipate issues, and support effective project execution. Review dismantling and inspection findings and recommend additional work or corrective actions where required. Review and approve site record documentation and support the resolution of non-conformities and general technical issues. Visit project sites during critical phases to provide engineering guidance and support. Support commissioning and testing activities to help ensure equipment and systems meet technical and operational requirements. Investigate and resolve technical issues during warranty periods and provide lessons learned and field feedback to design teams. Serve as a primary technical contact for operations and maintenance contracts. Develop engineering designs and related technical documentation for service projects, including customer support, condition assessments, spare parts, component refurbishment, and partial unit refurbishment. Collaborate with a multidisciplinary engineering team to identify solutions and accelerate issue resolution. Communicate effectively with customers, site personnel, project teams, and other stakeholders throughout project execution. Travel approximately 30% of the time within the United States, with additional travel as needed for customer meetings, training, and engineering activities. Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in the hydroelectric industry. Knowledge of hydro turbine and generator design and equipment erection methods. Ability to work effectively and independently in a remote environment while collaborating with a distributed engineering team. Strong technical communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with customers, site teams, and engineering colleagues. Strong problem-solving abilities, combining engineering principles with practical judgment and a hands-on approach. Proactive mindset with creativity, responsiveness, urgency, autonomy, and strong prioritization skills. Willingness and ability to travel throughout North America and internationally when required. Knowledge of engineering calculation methods related to strength of materials is an advantage. Experience with finite element analysis or simulation is an advantage. Knowledge of metallurgy and welding processes is an advantage. Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred. Must have unrestricted authorization to work in the United States.
