Lead Software Engineer

Accountabilities:: Own and evolve the technical architecture of core platform APIs and interoperability solutions, ensuring scalability, security, reliability, and maintainability as usage grows. Lead the design and implementation of complex, cross-cutting technical initiatives from initial proposal through production delivery. Design and guide interoperability and authentication solutions involving standards and technologies such as FHIR, SAML, SCIM, OAuth, and SMART. Establish technical standards, engineering best practices, and architectural patterns across new and legacy codebases. Review designs and production code to maintain high standards of quality, consistency, testability, and long-term maintainability. Mentor and develop engineers through technical coaching, pairing, design guidance, and support with complex engineering trade-offs. Partner with the Senior Engineering Manager to translate team objectives and business priorities into concrete technical plans and roadmaps. Identify technical risks early and communicate architectural considerations, dependencies, and trade-offs to relevant stakeholders. Represent Platform Services in cross-team technical discussions and build alignment around shared approaches, APIs, integrations, and architectural decisions. Break down ambiguous or large-scale technical challenges into clear, actionable plans that engineering teams can execute. Remain hands-on by contributing production code, particularly to high-leverage, complex, or high-risk areas of the platform. Promote a positive, collaborative, solution-oriented engineering culture. Requirements: 7–8+ years of relevant software engineering experience with progressively increasing technical scope and ownership. Demonstrated experience leading the design and delivery of complex, large-scale, or cross-team technical initiatives. Deep understanding of computer science fundamentals and large-scale distributed backend systems and APIs. Strong experience making, documenting, communicating, and defending significant architecture and design trade-offs. Proven ability to influence technical direction beyond individual assignments and build consensus across engineering teams. Strong track record of mentoring engineers and raising technical standards without formal people-management authority. Ability to write clear, concise, testable, maintainable code and establish the same standards across a team. Strong backend and API integration experience, with proficiency in modern web development technologies and techniques for building web services. Experience with cloud-based SaaS development and CI/CD practices. Ability to navigate ambiguity, competing priorities, and multiple stakeholder demands while maintaining sound technical judgment. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related engineering discipline; equivalent practical experience may be considered. Experience with open standards-based authentication frameworks such as OAuth and SAML is preferred. Experience with Ruby, Ruby on Rails, Python, or object-oriented and/or functional programming is desirable. Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, and monitoring platforms such as New Relic or Datadog is a plus. Experience working in Agile teams, particularly distributed or remote environments, is preferred. Experience with healthcare or social care technologies, including Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR), is advantageous.
