Health Communications Specialist III

Accountabilities:: Develop clear, engaging, and accessible communications materials on public health topics using plain-language and risk-communication principles, including website content, fact sheets, FAQs, talking points, infographics, social media content, video storyboards, and patient or family materials. Coordinate web and social media content across public health websites and agency or center social profiles while following established clearance and communication guidelines. Create and submit digital campaign messages and health-focused blog content, including moderating and responding appropriately to blog comments. Collaborate with communication services teams to develop graphics, videos, images, presentations, and other materials for public outreach. Develop tailored communications for healthcare professionals, clinicians, patients, and families on relevant public health topics. Coordinate with subject matter experts and communications professionals across multiple divisions to ensure content is accurate, consistent, and aligned with communication objectives. Support major announcements, awareness campaigns, and outreach initiatives in coordination with communications, web, and media teams. Proactively research communication challenges, identify solutions, and recommend updated strategies to improve program effectiveness. Represent the communications team in meetings and provide clear summaries, updates, and follow-up information. Ensure electronic communications materials comply with Section 508 accessibility requirements and applicable HHS checklists. Support communications research, metrics gathering, editing, and data analysis to inform recommendations and improve communication outcomes. Apply health education, risk communication, plain-language, and social marketing best practices throughout communications projects. Provide consultation, technical assistance, and training related to program and project implementation for internal and external stakeholders. Participate in designated public health response activities and training exercises, including staffing an Emergency Operations Center desk as required. Requirements: At least 7 years of relevant and directly comparable professional experience in health communications, public health communications, digital media, or a related field. Strong understanding of health communication principles, social marketing practices, risk communication, and plain-language writing. Experience developing communications for diverse audiences, including healthcare professionals, patients, families, and the general public. Demonstrated knowledge of current Section 508 accessibility requirements and the Clear Communication Index. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex public health information into clear and engaging content. Strong analytical, research, judgment, and decision-making skills, combined with practical business awareness and problem-solving ability. Advanced proficiency with Adobe and Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Ability to provide consultation, technical assistance, and training to internal and external groups. Ability to work independently, remain solution-oriented and motivated, and manage priorities effectively in a mission-driven environment. Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with subject matter experts, communications professionals, and other stakeholders. Ability to obtain and maintain the required CDC Public Trust Clearance. Ability to participate in public health response activities and training exercises as directed. Master’s degree in Communications, English, Health Education, Public Health, or a related discipline is preferred. Previous experience working with the CDC is highly desirable.
