Geotechnical Field Technician

Accountabilities:: Support geotechnical subsurface investigations, including borehole drilling, test pits, soil sampling, and groundwater monitoring. Coordinate drilling activities and utility clearance requirements. Log soil and rock samples under the direction of geotechnical engineers. Monitor field investigations and accurately document site conditions. Install and monitor groundwater observation wells and piezometers. Collect soil, rock, aggregate, asphalt, and groundwater samples for laboratory analysis. Prepare factual reports, summaries, data sheets, and graphs to support supervisors in interpreting test results. Complete field, laboratory, and office activities in accordance with established work plans and safe work practices. Maintain accurate records related to health and safety, equipment calibration certificates, equipment manuals, and applicable standards. Handle challenging situations professionally and diplomatically while maintaining positive relationships with internal and external contacts. Travel out of town, including to remote areas, for extended periods when required to complete field assignments. Consistently apply and promote workplace health and safety procedures. Requirements Technical diploma in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field. 3–5 years of experience in geotechnical work, materials testing, or construction inspection. Previous experience with drilling programs, earthworks inspection, or laboratory testing is considered an asset. Experience working on transportation, municipal, infrastructure, or similar projects is preferred. Understanding of soil classification and fundamental geotechnical principles. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications. Familiarity with field testing procedures and technical documentation requirements. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications. Strong commitment to occupational health and safety and the ability to consistently follow established procedures. Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions. Physically able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 25 kg. Comfortable walking across uneven terrain and working around active construction sites. Flexibility to work occasional overtime, early mornings, evenings, or weekends depending on project requirements. Valid Ontario G Driver's License. Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse project stakeholders.
