Principal CloudOps Engineer

Location: Ghent, Belgium/ Bucharest, Romania, hybrid model 2 days on-site

About the position

We're looking for a Principal Cloud Engineer to join our platform enablement team and help shape the infrastructure foundation that our engineering organisation builds on. This role is suited for someone who has worked in a modern, mature SaaS engineering culture — where autonomous product teams own their own AWS accounts, infrastructure, and CI/CD pipelines, and the platform team's job is to enable them to do that well.

You will provide architectural guidance, guardrails, and best practices that help teams move fast without breaking things. This is not a central DevOps role — we don't operate infrastructure on behalf of other teams. We build the rails they run on. If you've spent your career in an enablement or platform engineering function at a SaaS company with autonomous teams and a multi-account AWS environment, this role was written for you.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and evolve core AWS infrastructure to support the accelerated expansion of our platform capabilities across a multi-account, multi-environment organisation.
• Own and advance our AWS CDK (TypeScript) standards — you are the expert other teams come to for guidance, code reviews, and architectural decisions on IaC.
• Provide architectural guidance, guardrails, and reusable patterns that enable autonomous product teams to build and operate their own cloud infrastructure safely and efficiently.
• Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve complex infrastructure and platform issues, including reverse-engineering problems when documentation or context is limited.
• Help maintain reliable operational support, including participation in on-call and escalation rotations.
• Partner closely with engineering teams to share context, unblock work, and raise the infrastructure quality bar across the organisation.
• Support knowledge transfer and continuity in a complex, fast-moving operational environment.

Must haves

• AI-Native Engineering: Comfortable using AI agents (e.g., Claude Code, OpenAI Codex/Cursor) daily to accelerate development, refactoring, and infrastructure workflows.
• Principal-level AWS Infrastructure Experience: Deep hands-on expertise provisioning, scaling, and managing complex AWS ecosystem..
• Strong Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Proven experience leveraging AWS CDK or closely related cloud provisioning frameworks to define and deploy infrastructure cleanly.
• Strong Scripting & Coding Skills: Proficient in writing scalable, maintainable code to automate workflows and integrate platform components.
• Production Debugging & Troubleshooting: Excellent track record of identifying, diagnosing, and resolving incidents in live production environments.
• Autonomy & Rapid Adaptability: Ability to self-direct, pick up unfamiliar systems quickly, and deliver impact with minimal initial ramp-up time.
• Communication & Ownership: Clear, collaborative communicator comfortable driving initiatives and participating in on-call/escalation rotation.

Nice to haves

• AI Infrastructure Operations: Opportunity to build, scale, and optimize specialized AI/ML infrastructure and workload pipelines (great if you have experience, but we’re also happy to help you get hands-on here).
• SaaS & B2B Environments: Prior experience working within complex SaaS or high-throughput B2B software ecosystems.
• Infrastructure Modernization: Track record of joining mature infrastructure environments, identifying technical debt, and driving stability.
• High-Ownership Execution: Comfortable balancing deep individual contribution with mentorship and cross-team technical alignment.
