Sr Engineering Manager-Android & Device Platforms

Location: Remote – United States 

Travel Requirements: 2-4 times per year 

Job Summary  
As Senior Engineering Manager, Device Products & Operations, you will oversee software engineering across PatientPoint’s device-side product areas — field operations and device management tooling, exam-room patient engagement technology, waiting-room displays, and back-office systems — all running on Android and BrightSign devices in clinical and on-site settings.  

You will be the Engineering Manager for a mix of senior Engineering Leads and individual-contributor engineers, owning hiring, performance, and career growth directly, and stepping into the Engineering Lead’s technical-direction role yourself where a team needs it.  

This is a hands-on role: you’ll stay close to the code, contribute directly where it matters, champion AI-assisted and agentic ways of working across your teams, and bring credible, current expertise across Android (including Custom Android ROM, kiosk/rooted device management), AWS (IoT Core, Lambda, Bedrock AgentCore), and JavaScript/React front-ends to the technical decisions your teams make day to day.  

What You’ll Do  

• Own engineering outcomes across PatientPoint’s device product areas — field operations tooling, exam-room technology, waiting-room displays, and back-office systems.  
• Serve as the Engineering Manager for a mix of senior Engineering Leads and individual-contributor engineers — owning hiring, performance, and career growth directly — and step into the Engineering Lead’s technical-direction role yourself where a team needs it.  
• Stay close to the code: lead code reviews, contribute directly where needed, and guide teams on technical best practices.  
• Champion AI-assisted and agentic engineering practices — in your own work, across your teams’ day-to-day development, and in the AI-powered capabilities we build into our products (e.g., automated device diagnostics).  
• Coordinate priorities and dependencies across three or more concurrently active product areas with different tech stacks and team maturity.  
• Contribute to cross-org architecture discussions (ARB/RFCs), bringing a device-fleet perspective to architecture trade-off conversations.  
• Help engineers and Engineering Leads grow in their roles and career paths at PatientPoint.  
• Partner closely with Product and Design leads on execution across the device product areas.  
• Manage a blended team of full-time and contract engineers, onshore and offshore.  
• Escalate organizational, staffing, and resourcing needs for the device product areas to engineering leadership.  

What We Need  

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years leading engineers or engineering teams. 
• Recent hands-on technical involvement within the last 1–2 years, such as contributing to production code, reviewing pull requests, designing implementations, creating architecture plans, or directly troubleshooting and fixing software defects. 
  • Given the hands-on nature of this role, candidates will be asked to complete a coding assessment as part of the interview process.
• Current hands-on experience with native Android development using Kotlin and modern Android development practices. 
• Experience with AOSP, customized Android ROMs, rooted or kiosk-mode Android devices, APK distribution, or Android OS upgrade programs.
• Experience with Android device-platform development beyond traditional consumer mobile applications. 
• Experience with Java in addition to Kotlin. 
• Experience with JavaScript or TypeScript and React-based front-end development. 
• Experience building software for connected, managed, or remotely deployed devices, with an understanding of the operational challenges associated with physical device fleets. 
• Experience leading engineers across multiple concurrent products, workstreams, or technical domains. 
• Experience managing and developing engineers, including hiring, performance management, coaching, and career development. 
• Strong understanding of the constraints associated with deployed devices, including limited memory, storage, or processing power; intermittent connectivity; remote software updates; and supporting multiple hardware or OS generations. 
• Experience supporting remotely deployed device fleets, including considerations such as staged releases, monitoring fleet health, remote troubleshooting, and software update or rollback strategies. 
• Experience with backend technologies supporting device fleets, such as Kotlin/JVM services, Node.js, serverless architectures, or similar microservice environments. 
• Hands-on use of AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude, or similar tools, along with experience encouraging or driving their adoption within an engineering team. 
• Working knowledge of cloud-based services and APIs that support connected-device applications. 
• Experience managing blended teams of full-time employees and contractors. 

Desired Qualifications  

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, information systems, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience. 
• Experience with BrightSign or other digital signage/device-management platforms such as SignageOS or Broadsign. 
• Experience with IoT technologies and protocols such as AWS IoT Core, MQTT, Device Shadow, BLE, or GATT. 
• Experience with Jetpack Compose.
• Experience contributing to an architecture review process such as ARB, RFCs, or an equivalent technical-governance model. 
• Experience operating in a product-operating-model or product-trio structure. 
• Experience guiding or contributing to AI-powered product capabilities such as automated diagnostics, self-healing device operations, or similar AI-driven features. 
• Experience with agent-orchestration frameworks or patterns such as MCP-based tool access, AWS Bedrock AgentCore, Strands Agents, or similar approaches. 
• Experience with Kotlin Multiplatform or similar cross-platform native architectures. 
• Experience developing, tracking, or improving engineering delivery metrics such as DORA. 
• Experience with vulnerability management, application security, or security reviews for distributed or device-based systems. 
• Experience in healthcare or another regulated industry. 
• Experience leading through organizational change or team transitions.

• Comfort remaining technically hands-on and working alongside engineers on code, architecture, implementation, and device-level issues. 
• Strong ability to develop talent and help engineers grow into larger technical and leadership roles. 
• Strong judgment around when to provide technical direction versus empowering senior engineers and Engineering Leads to own decisions. 
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills across Product, Design, Architecture, and other engineering teams. 
• Ability to balance near-term delivery with long-term maintainability, reliability, and operational excellence 

Base Salary Band: $154,200 - $212,200
