As a Senior Software Engineer at Oportun, you will be a key technical contributor responsible for designing, building, and maintaining scalable, reliable platform services and shared libraries. You will work closely with Staff Engineers, product teams, and other senior engineers to evolve the engineering platform and improve developer productivity, system reliability, and delivery velocity.

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help design, build, and maintain our platform and associated services. This role will have a meaningful impact on Oportun’s evolving platform and engineering ecosystem. You will contribute to architectural decisions, lead complex features end-to-end, and help raise the technical bar across your immediate teams.

The ideal candidate is a strong hands-on engineer with experience building and operating distributed systems, who enjoys solving complex technical problems and mentoring other engineers while remaining deeply involved in day-to-day development.

What You'll Do

Your day-today

• You’ll design, build, test, deploy, and maintain scalable and reliable platform services and shared libraries.
• You’ll contribute to platform and system architecture decisions with a focus on reliability, scalability, security, and developer experience.
• You’ll write high-quality, maintainable code and help establish strong engineering practices across the team.
• You’ll collaborate with Staff Engineers and peers to implement engineering standards and patterns that support Continuous Delivery.
• You’ll identify and address performance, scalability, and reliability issues across platform services.
• You’ll participate in design reviews, code reviews, and technical discussions, providing clear and constructive feedback.
• You’ll strengthen operational excellence by improving monitoring, alerting, incident response, and production support practices.
• You’ll investigate root causes of production issues and implement long-term solutions that improve reliability and reduce on-call burden.
• You’ll mentor junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, pairing, and technical guidance.
• You’ll partner with cross-functional teams to understand business and technical needs and deliver solutions that create measurable member and business value.
• You’ll look for opportunities to use AI tools thoughtfully to accelerate development, improve code quality, reduce repetitive work, and support stronger technical decisions.

What You Bring

Skills & experience 

Required 

• 7+ years of related software engineering experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Strong software development experience with a focus on backend systems and services.
• Proficiency in Java, C#, C++, or a similar backend programming language.
• Strong understanding of software design principles, data structures, and algorithms.
• Experience designing, building, and operating scalable, reliable, and secure distributed systems.
• 3+ years of experience designing, building, deploying, and maintaining container-based applications.
• 4+ years of experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Strong problem-solving skills and experience debugging complex technical issues.
• Experience with Continuous Delivery practices and automated deployment pipelines.
• Working knowledge of secure development practices and security considerations in distributed systems.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, including experience working across technical and cross-functional teams.
• Experience mentoring engineers and contributing to team-level technical leadership.

Nice to Have

• Experience in financial services, fintech, banking, or another highly regulated industry.
• Experience building internal developer platforms, shared engineering services, or developer productivity tools.
• Experience improving observability, reliability, or operational practices across distributed systems.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering productivity, code quality, or technical workflows.
