Senior Software Engineer, Lending

Build lending at Adyen from the first line of code.

Businesses run on Adyen: they accept payments, manage their money and issue cards on our platform. Access to capital has been the missing piece, and we're building it now. Lending at Adyen is a brand-new team, and we're looking for the engineers who will lay its foundations.

Our advantage is data. We already see how a business actually performs through its payment flows, so we can offer fast, fair financing, embedded directly in the platforms our customers use every day. That lets us serve businesses that traditional lenders overlook, without the long paperwork process.

This is a true zero-to-one opportunity. There's no legacy system to maintain and no roadmap handed down from above. You'll help decide what we build, how we build it, and which trade-offs we make. You'll be part of a small team with the backing, scale and customer base of a global company.

 What you’ll do:

• Design and build core lending systems from scratch, including loan origination, underwriting and decisioning engines, repayment flows and the ledgers that track every cent.
• Turn ambiguous problems into shipped products, working closely with product, risk, finance and legal partners.
• Make foundational architecture decisions that will shape how lending scales across markets and regulatory jurisdictions.
• Build for integrity from day one. In lending, correctness, auditability and resilience are the product.
• Own your work end to end: requirements, design, implementation, testing, launch and iteration based on real customer feedback.
• Help shape the team's engineering culture, practices and standards while they're still being written.

Who you are:

• You take ownership. You care about the customer problem, not just the ticket.
• You enjoy building something from nothing and are comfortable when the path isn't mapped out yet.
• You have a good understanding of Software Engineering practices and interest in product knowledge.
• You are familiar with complex large scale distributed systems.
• You value involving other people to hear different perspectives.
• You balance speed with rigor. You know when to ship and learn, and when to slow down and get it exactly right.
• You're curious about financial products and are eager to learn how lending works, even if you haven't worked in it before.
• You value collaboration and seek out different perspectives to make better decisions.

Minimum qualifications:

• 8+ years of software development experience.
• Experience with Java, web services, REST APIs, webhooks and SQL/PostgreSQL.
• Experience designing and building large-scale distributed systems.
• Full professional proficiency in English.
• This role is based out of our San Francisco office. We are an office-first company and value in-person collaboration; we do not offer remote-only roles.
