Senior Data Scientist - Applied ML

Technology, Data & Analytics Team

You’re a data scientist with experience in building and deploying machine learning solutions for complex, and sometimes ambiguous, business problems. You have worked end-to-end on the ML model lifecycle, from early data discovery and analysis to deploying and maintaining models in production. You believe that the best data science work accelerates learning, improves decision making, and ultimately drives measurable impact for customers and the business.

Justworks is looking for a Senior Data Scientist to join our ML group within the Data & Analytics team. You'll primarily partner with Product and Engineering to identify and frame domain-specific use-cases as data science problems, prototype and evaluate the appropriate technical solutions, and work with our Machine Learning Engineers to deploy them into production and maintain them.

What You Will Work On

Lead end-to-end machine learning and data science projects:

• Partner with product and engineering leaders to identify and scope new data science use-cases within their domains such as Risk & Insurance and Payments
• Utilize SQL to query both structured and unstructured datasets relevant to the problems
• Prototype, evaluate, and deploy technical solutions including classical ML, statistical techniques, algorithms, deep learning, and LLMs
• Develop and apply AI-assisted approaches to analysis, model exploration, and deployment to multiply your impact and expand the reach of data science across the organization
• Help implement and curate strategic assets for the team such as data assets, generalized code and tooling, and reusable frameworks
• Support technical and code reviews on the team
• Build model monitors and systematic methods of obtaining consumer feedback from models post-deployment
• Collaborate with our MLE team to inform the model deployment infrastructure and MLOps tooling roadmap
• Perform other related responsibilities as needed based on department and/or organizational needs.

How You Will Do Your Work

In the Data Scientist role, how results are achieved is paramount for your success and ultimately result in our success as an organization. In this role, your foundational knowledge, skills, abilities and personal attributes are anchored in the following competencies:

• Good judgment - the exercise of critical thinking, analyzing and assessing problems and implications, identifying patterns, making connections of underlying issues, understanding risks and developing mitigation strategies, and taking ownership of the outcome.
• Teamwork and communication - putting our collective best together through documentation, collaboration, relationship-building, listening, empathy, recruiting, and evangelism.
• Influence and leadership - fostering a community of knowledge-sharing, collaboration, mentorship, and forward-thinking. This includes helping product partners develop a more data-informed mindset, not just answering their questions.
• Skills and knowledge - the capacity to actively learn and apply specific domain knowledge, know-how, and best practices to continually enhance and improv

In addition, all Justworkers focus on aligning their behaviors to our core values known as COGIS. It stands for:

• Camaraderie - Day to day you can be seen working together toward a higher purpose. You like to have fun. You’re an active listener, treat people respectfully, and have a strong desire to know and help others.
• Openness - Your default is to be open. You're willing to share information, understand other perspectives, and consider new possibilities. You’re curious, ask open questions, and are receptive to thoughts and feedback from others.
• Grit - You demonstrate grit by having the courage to commit and persevere. You’re committed, earnest, and dive in to get the job done well with a positive attitude.
• Integrity - Simply put, do what you say and say what you'll do. You’re honest and forthright, have a strong moral compass, and strive to match your words with your actions while leading by example.
• Simplicity - Be like Einstein: “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler.”

Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience as a data scientist or machine learning practitioner, with a track record of driving business impact through statistical analysis, machine learning, and productionizing models
• Strong expertise in predictive modeling, numerical algorithms, and statistical methods
• Strong communication and data storytelling skills — you can translate complex findings into clear narratives that influence strategy and decisions
• Strong business acumen and the ability to connect analysis to product strategy, roadmap tradeoffs, and business outcomes
• Fluent in SQL
• Proficient in Python for both model research and development, as well as writing production grade code for deployment
• Familiarity with a cloud-based data stack (e.g. Snowflake, dbt)
• Demonstrated curiosity about AI tools and emerging technologies, with a track record of applying them to accelerate analysis, improve rigor, or expand the reach of data science work
• Prior experience in a high-growth startup or SaaS company is preferred

The base wage range for this position based in our New York City Office is targeted at $166,000-$214,000 per year.
