Head of Business Technology Engineering

About the role

Anthropic's Business Technology Engineering team builds the systems the company runs on. We own the internal platforms every employee uses and our collaboration tooling, and we embed engineers directly with Legal, Security, Communications, Product Operations and other business functions to rebuild how their work gets done with Claude at the center. Our mandate is to make Anthropic the best-run company in the world at using its own models internally, and to be the example our customers point to.

We are hiring an engineering leader to run this org. You will lead a growing engineering organization across two tracks: Platforms, which builds and operates the shared systems the company depends on, and Forward Deployed, which drops into a business function, proves Claude wins on a real workflow, hands off, and moves on. You will partner on defining the roadmap, build relationships with functional leaders, grow the team, and shape what forward deployed engineering looks like inside a frontier AI lab.

You'll report to the Head of Business Technology and IT, within the Security organization, and you’ll make up the full Business Technology function along with a team of Business Systems Analysts and Product Managers. Together, BizTech partners closely with IT Engineering on corporate systems and endpoints; with Security Engineering on data handling and permissions for agentic workflows; with Labs and Product on dogfooding and the internal builds that become external patterns; with GTM, who point Enterprise customers at this team as the reference for how Anthropic runs internally; and with the leaders of Legal, Workplace, Communications, Product Operations and Product Support, who are your customers.

Responsibilities

• Lead and scale a global org of engineers; hire, level and develop the leads under you.
• Partner, develop, and execute a year-plus roadmap for how Anthropic's business functions work with Claude, and the success metrics that go with it.
• Run the Platforms track: reliability, velocity and scale of Claude Support and the platform layer that every employee depends on.
• Run the Forward Deployed track: engagement portfolio, prioritization across functions, handoffs to durable owners, and adoption that actually moves.
• Be the technical executive partner to the leaders of Legal, Workplace, Comms, Product Ops and Product Support; make the case for ambitious deployment and for the boundaries on it in the same conversation.
• Partner with Labs and Product on dogfooding: feed load-bearing signal back ("here is the eval that shows the gap") and ship internal builds that become external product patterns.
• Represent how Anthropic runs internally to Enterprise customers alongside GTM.
• Set the engineering bar: production-adjacent builds, eval rigor, reusable patterns, responsible internal deployment with real data and real permissions.

You may be a good fit if you

• Have 12+ years in software engineering and 6+ years leading engineers, including at least 3 years managing managers and at least one org of 20+ across multiple domains that you structured yourself
• Have run internal-tools, business-systems or platform engineering at a company that added functions faster than it added engineers, and can speak to reliability outcomes on the platform side and adoption outcomes on the embedded side
• Lead through technical judgment: whether or not you've been hands-on lately, you can go from an agent architecture to its eval design to its failure modes with your engineers, and your reviews make their builds better
• Can walk a General Counsel, a Head of Workplace or a room of senior engineers with strong opinions through a trade-off, make a recommendation, and bring them to a decision they'll commit to
• Can hold a high bar on craft while saying no to low-leverage work, and explain the no to the person who asked.
• Want real ownership of how a frontier AI lab runs itself on its own models, and care about doing that responsibly — real data, real permissions, real people on the other end

Strong candidates may also have

• Forward deployed, software engineering or applied AI leadership experience with external customers.
• Product management experience or a track record partnering closely with PMs and analysts.
• Experience with corporate systems (Salesforce, Workday, Google Workspace, Slack) at platform scale.
• Have built the career rubric or leveling framework for a new kind of engineering role, or stood up a forward deployed function from zero
