Associate Software Engineer

Karbon is seeking a Junior Full Stack Software Engineer to join one of our agile engineering teams in either Sydney or Melbourne.

This role is a great opportunity for an early-career engineer who wants to build strong technical and product foundations while working on real customer problems. Your primary focus will be investigating and resolving customer support cases and escalations. You'll work closely with other engineers, QA, and product partners to understand issues, identify root causes, and deliver fixes that make a real difference to our customers.

You'll be part of the engineering team and have the opportunity to learn the wider codebase, development practices, and product. As you build confidence and experience, there will be opportunities to take on broader engineering work and grow into other areas of the team or wider organisation.

About the Role

• Investigate and resolve customer issues – Work through support cases and escalations to understand what is happening, reproduce issues, investigate the underlying cause, and implement appropriate fixes.
• Debug and improve the product – Get hands-on with the codebase, logs, databases, and development tools to diagnose problems and improve the reliability and quality of our software.
• Learn the product deeply – Build a strong understanding of how Karbon works and how customers use it, using that knowledge to make better technical decisions and identify opportunities to improve the product.
• Work closely with the team – Collaborate with experienced engineers, QA, product managers, and support teams to investigate problems, review solutions, test fixes, and get issues safely into customers' hands.
• Balance speed and quality – Learn when an issue needs a quick resolution and when it requires deeper investigation, making thoughtful trade-offs while maintaining a high standard of engineering.
• Use AI tools thoughtfully – Leverage AI to help investigate problems, understand unfamiliar code, explore solutions, or write tests, while applying good judgement and reviewing everything before it ships.
• Build engineering skills – Develop your understanding of our systems, architecture, development practices, testing, deployments, and the tools we use to build and operate Karbon.
• Work with increasing autonomy – Start by tackling well-defined issues with support from the team, and gradually take ownership of more complex problems as your skills and confidence grow.

About You!

We know great engineers come from many backgrounds. You don’t need to tick every box below to apply.

• A basic understanding of software fundamentals such as APIs, debugging, testing, and data structures
• Some hands-on experience building or maintaining web applications using C#, .NET and JavaScript or TypeScript
• Familiarity with SQL Server or relational databases, and an interest in understanding how data flows through an application
• Strong curiosity and problem-solving skills – you enjoy digging into a problem, asking questions, and figuring out what's going on
• A willingness to get comfortable working in an existing codebase and learning how a large application works
• A sense of ownership and pride in your work, balanced with a willingness to ask questions, accept feedback, and learn from others
• An interest in understanding customer problems and using technology to solve them
• Comfortable working collaboratively with engineers, QA, product, and support teams
• A growth mindset – you're excited to build your skills and take on more responsibility over time
• A degree in Computer Science (or similar), or equivalent practical experience
